This particular power station is located within Europe’s largest manmade cavern, making it a challenging but equally thrilling endeavour.
Rising to the Challenge: The Overhead Crane Installation
Our task was to install two Overhead Cranes (OHCs), each with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 160 tonnes while removing an existing one. This required deft navigation of the spatial constraints of this unique hydropower station. Yet, our determination and specialised expertise triumphed. The impressive aspect? We executed this task seamlessly while the plant remained fully operational – all without a single moment of downtime.
A Bespoke Solution to a Complex Task
Developing a solution for this intricate project involved an extensive phase of preparatory work. First, we ensured smooth access and circulation within the plant. Rigorous health and safety checks, Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMs), and meticulous drawings were the backbone of this project’s successful completion.
After this groundwork, we deployed four rigging experts armed with a 450-tonne hydraulic jacking system. The team conducted the installation and removal work across two separate visits, marking an astounding testament to our commitment to the task.
What was the Installation Process?
Following a three-day rig set-up on-site, the team faced the imposing task of erecting the new OHCs using complex jack lifts. The challenges of working within an operational power station and its restricted spaces could have been intimidating. But with our blend of perseverance and industry-leading skill, Vanguard’s team flawlessly executed the task.
